Maurice was educated at Otago Boys' High School and graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in accounting in 1971. He commenced his accountancy career at Anderson & Co (now Polson Higgs & Co) in Dunedin. In December 1972, Maurice was admitted as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand as a Chartered Accountant (C.A) and was issued with a Certificate of Public Practice soon afterwards. He became a partner in the Timaru accountancy practice of Solomon Stockwell & Co, which later became McFarlane Hornsey Matthews. After twenty-five years in this firm, Maurice resigned to set up Maurice Matthews & Co in Timaru in July 1997. The company was incorporated in 2006.
Maurice is passionate about South Canterbury and has served on many committees over the years including fifteen years on the Mid-South Canterbury Branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants including a term as Branch President and several years on the Taxation and Public Practice Committees. Maurice was Secretary of the South Canterbury Branch of the Motor Trade Association for over 25 years and was the longest serving Branch Secretary of the Association in New Zealand.Maurice is an avid golfer, enjoys overseas travel, spending time at his timeshare or apartment in Fiji and takes pleasure in watching or participating in most other sports.
